It was a horrible room, brown, ugly carpet, wood panelling on the walls flecked with paint and dust, and the razor socket was hanging out of the wall in the bathroom by its wires. First they gave us one of the worst hotel rooms I have ever seen (although to be fair we arrived early in the morning 9:30am-ish and asked if we could have a room earlier than the usual afternoon check in time). Well.ok.not the worst I've been in but far from the best. …Ī hotel advertised as "Quirky" and worth a stay in The Lonely Planet Guide. The hotel management speak very good english and we found them to be very helpful and accomodating. The windows of the rooms that face the street are flimsy and old and offer no sound insulation you will need earplugs if you are a light sleeper. But bear in mind that when you return, the street it fronts is a centre of Madrid nightlife and there are merry revellers thronging the road until the early hours. Which is just as well since the room did not inspire relaxation and one felt only too keen to get out. That said, the hotel's location is ideal for the city centre and is a good base for exploring the city on foot. The fixtures and fittings are ancient (in the manner of student-digs as opposed to antiques) and give the impression that you are to be the last person to stay there before it is gutted for modernisation. Several of the rooms are seriously run-down and overly reveal the building's former use as a brothel. I ended up with what was described as a "special" room for 84 euros a night but the moniker was somewhat misleading. I took a fair bit of effort trying to book it through the usual on-line booking firms but found it was not listed by any. I found the Hotel Monaco recommended in the Time Out guide and in the British Guardian" newspaper. Unless being based in the heart of Madrid'd nightlife is your main objective, I'd recommend spending a little extra and staying at one of the hotels more highly rated in Trip Advisor.
